Why Indian Robusta · Perché il Robusta Indiano

The Robusta behind the crema in Italian espresso

Italy is Europe's second-largest green coffee importer after Germany — and no European market buys proportionally more Robusta. Around 39% of Italy's green coffee imports are Robusta (roughly 243,000 tonnes in 2024), against a European average near 30%. Northern Italian espresso blends typically carry 20–30% Robusta; in the South the share climbs higher still. That Robusta has to deliver three things: thick crema, heavy body and a clean, neutral cup that won't fight the Arabica.

This is exactly what Indian Robusta was built for. Grown under silver-oak shade at 700–900 metres in Coorg, Wayanad and Chikmagalur, Indian Robusta matures slowly, producing denser, sweeter beans with none of the rubbery harshness common in fast-grown lowland Robustas. It is why India is Italy's single largest coffee supplier by several measures — over 1 million 60-kg bags crossed from Indian ports to Italy in 2025, the majority of it Robusta Cherry and washed Parchment grades, and why Indian Cherry Robusta appears by name on the plantation lists of historic Italian torrefazioni.

  • Crema generation: high-density S274 cultivar beans produce the thick, persistent crema Italian bars demand.
  • Neutral, clean cup: shade-grown maturation gives chocolate-nut tones with low bitterness — it carries a blend, it doesn't hijack it.
  • Blend economics: Indian Robusta Cherry AB delivers premium espresso performance at a commercial price point with deep, continuous supply.
  • Familiar to your roaster: Italian blenders have used Indian Robusta for generations — no recipe risk, no re-education.

EUDR-ready before your deadline — not after it

Under the EU Deforestation Regulation, from 30 December 2026 (large operators) and 30 June 2027 (SMEs), every consignment of green coffee placed on the EU market needs verified geolocation data, a deforestation risk assessment and a Due Diligence Statement. Non-compliance risks shipment blocks, confiscation and fines up to 4% of EU turnover. We prepare the data so your DDS practically fills itself in.

Importer Concerns, Answered · Le Vostre Domande

What Italian importers worry about — and how we remove the risk

Concern 01

"The sample cups well. Will the container match it?"

Samples are drawn composite-style from across the entire lot, and the cup score is locked in writing at order confirmation. If the arrival sample at your Italian warehouse falls significantly below the locked score, the lot is replaced or refunded.

Concern 02

"Will it clear EU customs — OTA, MRL, EUDR?"

Every lot ships with an NABL OTA report (<5 ppb), EU MRL compliance, phyto and fumigation certs, and EUDR geolocation data. GrainPro liners keep moisture stable so OTA doesn't develop mid-voyage.

Concern 03

"Can they supply volume consistently, season after season?"

We source from the high-volume Robusta belts of Coorg, Wayanad and Chikmagalur with multi-estate supply. Forward contracts with ICE-linked differentials secure your annual Robusta programme, not just one container.

Concern 04

"Who do I actually talk to after I pay?"

One named export manager from inquiry to Genoa clearance, with a personal WhatsApp line. Milestone updates at QC, fumigation, loading, BL issue and vessel departure. Documents within 24h of loading.

Concern 05

"Is the price on the invoice the price I was quoted?"

Yes. Quotes are locked for 7–15 days; confirmed orders never carry "market moved" surcharges. For programmes, transparent ICE-London-linked formulas with fixed differentials.

Concern 06

"Can I verify traceability for my retail customers?"

Every consignment carries a lot card: estate, GPS, altitude, cultivar, process, harvest date. Estate photos and joint video cuppings available for retail-facing single-origin claims.

FAQ · Domande Frequenti

Questions Italian coffee importers ask us

Which Indian coffee variety is imported the most into Italy?
Robusta. Italy is Europe's most Robusta-heavy market — roughly 39% of its green coffee imports (about 243,000 tonnes in 2024) — and India is one of its principal Robusta origins. The single most-shipped Indian grade to Italy is Robusta Cherry AB (natural/sun-dried), used for body and crema in classic espresso blends, followed by Robusta Cherry AA, washed Kaapi Royale and Robusta Parchment AAA for premium lines.
What is the MOQ and how much coffee fits in a container?
Standard MOQ is one 20-ft FCL: approximately 18–20 MT, loaded as ~320 jute bags of 60 kg with GrainPro liners. For first-time Italian buyers we can discuss LCL trial lots so you can validate the coffee in your blend before committing to full containers.
Are you EUDR compliant? What exactly do you provide?
Yes — every lot ships EUDR-ready. You receive farm-level geolocation data (GeoJSON polygons), evidence of production on land cultivated before the 31 December 2020 cut-off, legality documentation and a per-shipment compliance statement — everything your Due Diligence Statement requires as the EU operator. Deadlines: 30 December 2026 for medium/large operators, 30 June 2027 for micro and small enterprises.
How long is transit from India to Genoa or Trieste?
Typically 22–28 days via the Suez route from Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai to Genoa, Trieste or La Spezia. Vado Ligure and Salerno can be arranged. From confirmed order, total lead time to vessel loading is 20–30 days for green coffee.
How do you guarantee the container matches the approved sample?
Pre-shipment samples are drawn composite-style from the front, middle and back of the lot — not from a cleaned showcase bag. The SCA cup score is locked in writing with your order confirmation. If the arrival sample in Italy scores significantly below the locked score, we replace the lot or refund.
How is Ochratoxin A (OTA) risk managed for EU customs?
Every consignment includes an OTA test report from an NABL-accredited lab confirming levels below the EU 5 ppb limit. GrainPro hermetic liners inside the jute bags hold moisture at 10–12% through the sea voyage, preventing the moisture spikes that cause mould and OTA formation in transit. Desiccant packs and humidity-logger data are available for extra assurance.
What payment terms do you accept from Italian buyers?
Irrevocable LC at sight (standard for first orders), or 50% TT advance with balance against the Bill of Lading scan. Documents Against Acceptance is available for credit-evaluated repeat buyers. Settlement in EUR or USD. The invoice never changes between order confirmation and BL.
Is your pricing fixed or linked to the London Robusta market?
Both options. Spot quotes are locked for a 7–15 day window. For annual programmes we offer ICE-linked formulas — London Robusta (LCO) for Robusta, NY Arabica (KC) for Arabica — with transparent, fixed differentials, so your buying price moves with the market you already hedge against.
When is the Indian Robusta harvest, and when should Italian buyers book?
Robusta harvest runs January to March; washed Arabica November to February. Fresh-crop contracts are typically negotiated November through March. Monsoon Malabar, produced during the June–September monsoon, reaches market September–November. For guaranteed fresh-crop Cherry AB programmes, we recommend booking December–February.
Can you supply both the Robusta and Arabica components of our blend?
Yes. Alongside Robusta Cherry AB/AA, Kaapi Royale and Parchment AAA, we supply washed Arabica Plantation A/AA, natural Arabica Cherry AA and the specialty grades Monsoon Malabar AA and Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold — so a single container from one origin can carry both sides of an espresso blend, mixed to your ratios.
Siete fornitori di caffè verde indiano per torrefazioni italiane?
Sì. Forniamo caffè verde indiano all'ingrosso — Robusta Cherry AB/AA, Kaapi Royale, Parchment AAA, Plantation A e Monsoon Malabar — a importatori, trader e torrefazioni in tutta Italia, con resa CIF Genova, Trieste e La Spezia, documentazione EUDR completa e campioni gratuiti entro 48 ore.
