Import Coffee from India to the UAE
Export grade Indian Arabica, Robusta and specialty coffee for roasters, traders and re-exporters across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider Emirates. Five to eight days from Indian port to Jebel Ali, the shortest corridor we run.
- Green coffee beans
- Custom roasted
- Instant coffee
Can you import coffee from India to the UAE?
Yes, and the India to UAE coffee corridor is unusually favourable. Typical sea transit from Indian ports to Jebel Ali is five to eight days, and the India UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement gives most Indian agricultural goods preferential duty access.
The CEPA benefit is not automatic. It is claimed at entry against a valid Certificate of Origin, and a UAE importer who does not present one pays the standard rate instead. That single document is where most of the commercial advantage on this route sits, and it is covered in full below along with Dubai Municipality registration and the Arabic labelling rules that catch first time importers.
Alstoe India Exports supplies green, custom roasted and instant coffee to UAE buyers from a strong network of verified suppliers across the Western Ghats belt in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. For the complete grade reference, cultivars and photographs of every bean, see our complete Indian coffee portfolio.
Why Dubai buyers source coffee from India
The UAE is not primarily a consuming market for green coffee. It is a processing and re-export hub, and that changes what a buyer here should be looking for. Dubai imports green beans, adds value through cleaning, blending, roasting and packing, then moves finished product across the Gulf, the wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. India is one of the few origins close enough to make that model work on short lead times.
The shortest corridor we run
Five to eight days from Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai to Jebel Ali. Compare that with three to four weeks to Europe and four to six to North America. Short transit means less working capital tied up on the water, tighter inventory, and a realistic ability to reorder inside a month rather than a quarter.
Built for the free zone model
Jebel Ali Free Zone hosts purpose built coffee infrastructure, including temperature and humidity controlled green bean storage, cleaning, de-stoning, blending and re-bagging, contract roasting and packing, and SCA standard cupping facilities. A trader can land Indian green, process it in Dubai and re-export without ever entering the UAE mainland market.
Robusta the region already drinks
Naturally processed Indian Robusta, particularly Robusta Cherry AA, has a full bodied, earthy, sweet profile that sits naturally in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean espresso traditions. Washed Robusta Kaapi Royale gives the crema and body a Gulf cafe programme needs without the harshness of commodity natural Robusta.
Three formats, three different compliance loads
In the UAE the format you import decides how much regulatory work you take on. Green beans in jute for a roaster are not a consumer product. A retail ready pack is, and it brings Arabic labelling, product registration and shelf life rules with it.
Green coffee beans
The core line for Dubai traders, free zone operators and roasteries. Arabica and Robusta in all Indian Coffee Board grades, washed or natural, Q graded and cup scored before dispatch.

The label sticker trap. Arabic labelling on retail packs must be applied before the goods leave origin. Stickering cannot be completed on arrival in the UAE, and production and expiry dates are expected on the original manufacturer applied label rather than on an added sticker. If you are buying retail ready roasted coffee from any origin, the artwork has to be approved before the print run, not after the container is booked. We will not print a retail pack until your label assessment is settled, because reworking one at destination is not an option.
Matching Indian grades to UAE applications
Indian coffee is graded by species, processing method and screen size. The table maps the grades most relevant to Dubai buyers against the application each one suits. Cup scores are typical SCA ranges and are verified per lot before dispatch, never quoted from a catalogue.
| Grade | Species & process | Screen | Typical cup | UAE application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Robusta Cherry AA | Robusta, natural | 18/64 inch | 78 to 82 | Gulf espresso traditions, body and sweetness |
| Robusta Kaapi Royale | Robusta, washed | 17/64 inch+ | 78 to 82 | Cafe espresso programmes, crema without harshness |
| Robusta Parchment AAA | Robusta, washed | 19/64 inch | 80 to 83 | Espresso blends where whole bean is visible |
| Robusta Parchment AB | Robusta, washed | 15/64 to 17/64 | 76 to 80 | Commercial blends, instant base, re-export volume |
| Plantation A | Arabica, washed | 17/64 inch | 82 to 85 | House blends, hotel and food service programmes |
| Plantation AA | Arabica, washed | 18/64 inch | 83 to 86 | Single origin retail, specialty roasteries |
| Arabica Cherry AA | Arabica, natural | 18/64 inch | 82 to 85 | Espresso blends needing body and sweetness |
| Monsoon Malabar AA | Arabica, monsooned | 18/64 inch | 82 to 86 | Low acid single origin, specialty menu differentiator |
| Mysore Nuggets EB | Arabica, washed | 19/64 inch+ | 84 to 87 | Flagship single origin, gifting and retail formats |

Robusta Cherry AA
Sun dried Robusta with the fruit left intact during drying, producing a full bodied, earthy cup with pronounced sweetness and strong crema. It is common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean espresso traditions, which makes it the most natural entry point for a Gulf buyer testing Indian origin for the first time.
Confirm cup scoreCrop yearMoistureRobusta Kaapi Royale
The Coffee Board trade name for washed Robusta Parchment A. Wet processing keeps the body and thick crema while removing the harshness of natural Robusta. Long established with European espresso blenders and increasingly specified by Gulf cafe groups building consistent milk based programmes.
Confirm defectsScreenCup scoreMonsoon Malabar AA
Natural Arabica exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks. The beans absorb humidity, swell to nearly double their size and turn pale gold, giving a bold, earthy, very low acid cup. For a Dubai specialty roaster it is an origin story no competitor on the shelf can match.

What actually governs a coffee import into the UAE
Five things decide whether a UAE coffee import clears cleanly and at the right duty. Standards are set at Gulf level through GSO, but registration and inspection are administered emirate by emirate, so the authority you deal with depends on where you land the goods.
-
Hold the right trade licence and register on the food system
Your UAE entity needs a trade licence carrying a food import or food trading activity. Without it you cannot access the food import platforms at all. Imports are registered electronically, in Dubai through the Dubai Municipality Food Import and Re-export System and nationally through the federal food registration platform. Abu Dhabi imports are handled by the Abu Dhabi agriculture and food safety authority. The standards are common across the Emirates; the procedures are not.
-
Claim the CEPA preference with a valid Certificate of Origin
The India UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement gives preferential duty access to the large majority of Indian goods entering the UAE, including agricultural lines. The preference is not automatic. Your customs entry must be supported by a valid CEPA Certificate of Origin, and the goods must satisfy the product specific rules of origin. Without that document the standard rate applies and the benefit is lost. We issue the Certificate of Origin through the authorised agency for every shipment on this route.
-
Register the product if it is going to retail
Every food product sold in the UAE must be registered with the relevant municipal authority before it reaches shelf, with the label, ingredient list, certificate of analysis, nutritional information and shelf life details submitted per product. First time products can be pulled for laboratory testing. Green coffee in jute bags moving to a roaster is not a retail SKU and does not carry this load; a roasted retail pack does.
-
Get the Arabic label right before dispatch
Labels must carry Arabic, either Arabic alone or Arabic with English, and any additional language must match the Arabic exactly. Mandatory content follows the Gulf labelling standard: product name, full ingredient list in descending order, net weight, production and expiry dates, storage conditions and country of origin. Stickers are permitted but must be applied before export, not on arrival, and production and expiry dates are expected on the original label. Missing or incorrect Arabic labelling is one of the most common reasons food shipments are held at UAE ports.
-
Decide free zone or mainland before you book
Landing green coffee into a Jebel Ali free zone facility for storage, blending, roasting and re-export is a different customs and compliance path from importing into the UAE domestic market. The free zone route suits traders serving the wider Gulf, North Africa and South Asia; the mainland route suits anyone selling into UAE retail or food service. Decide which one you are doing before the shipment is booked, because it changes the documentation set.
Documents we issue
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Bill of Lading
- CEPA Certificate of Origin for the preferential claim
- ICO Certificate of Origin
- Coffee Board RCMC certificate
- Phytosanitary certificate, Plant Quarantine India
- Quality Report with SCA cup score and lab COA
- Halal certificate where required
- Fumigation certificate
Filed by you or your agent
- Trade licence with food activity
- Registration on the applicable food import platform
- Customs entry with the CEPA preferential claim
- Product registration and label assessment for retail SKUs
- Free zone or mainland routing decision
The Certificate of Origin is the one document worth checking before the vessel sails. Everything else can be corrected; a missing preferential claim usually cannot.
What to lock before you contract
A short voyage removes much of the moisture risk that troubles longer routes, but it does not remove the need to write the contract properly. Size drift, defect count and cup score are still decided by what you specify and by whether the supplier samples honestly.

- Cup scores issued by SCA certified Q graders and locked in writing with the order confirmation
- 60 kg jute bags with GrainPro hermetic liners as standard, even on a short voyage, because Gulf humidity at discharge is the risk rather than the sea leg
- Ochratoxin A and residue test reports from a NABL accredited lab with every consignment
- Estate name, altitude, cultivar mix, processing method and harvest date on every lot card
- 500 g sample dispatched within 48 hours, which on this route can reach Dubai faster than most origins can quote

Five to eight days to Jebel Ali
Coffee from the Western Ghats loads at Mangalore, our usual routing for the Middle East and the closest port to the Karnataka growing belt, or at Cochin and Chennai. The India to UAE leg is short enough that reorder cycles behave more like regional distribution than international sourcing.
| Load port, India | UAE discharge | Indicative transit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangalore | Jebel Ali | About 5 to 8 days | Closest port to the Karnataka coffee belt, usual Middle East routing |
| Cochin | Jebel Ali | About 5 to 8 days | Suits Kerala Robusta lots |
| Chennai | Jebel Ali | About 5 to 8 days | East coast option, wider sailing frequency |
| Mangalore or Cochin | Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi | About 5 to 8 days | Confirm service availability per sailing |
What short transit changes
- Less working capital tied up in goods on the water
- Reorder cycles measured in weeks rather than a quarter
- Smaller, more frequent lots become economic, so you can hold less inventory
- Fresh crop reaches the Gulf sooner after harvest than it reaches Europe or North America
- Air freight is viable for samples, launch stock and urgent gaps
- Less exposure to the routing disruption that affects longer westbound corridors

- Peak Arabica pickingDecember to January
- Robusta harvestJanuary to March
- Monsooning processJune to September
- Monsoon Malabar in marketSeptember to November

Trial orders and first shipments
Standard green coffee MOQ is one 20 ft container. LCL shipments can be discussed for specialty single origin lots and for first time buyers building confidence, and the short sea leg makes a small trial lot far more practical here than on any long haul route.
Raise it at the inquiry stage rather than after the quote, since it changes the routing and the freight structure.
UAE coffee import questions, answered
Does the India UAE CEPA reduce duty on Indian coffee?
The India UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement gives preferential duty access to the large majority of Indian goods entering the UAE, including agricultural lines. The preference is claimed at customs entry and is not automatic. The goods must meet the product specific rules of origin, and the entry must be supported by a valid CEPA Certificate of Origin. Without that document the standard rate applies and the benefit is lost. Confirm the treatment for your specific HS line with your customs agent, and ask us for the Certificate of Origin with every shipment.
How long does shipping take from India to Dubai?
Indicative sea transit is about five to eight days from Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai to Jebel Ali. That is the shortest coffee corridor we operate, against roughly three to four weeks to Europe and four to six weeks to North America. Short transit means less working capital on the water and reorder cycles measured in weeks. Confirm the current schedule with your freight forwarder before planning around an arrival date.
Do I need Arabic labelling on green coffee imported into the UAE?
Arabic labelling requirements apply to food products sold to consumers, so green coffee shipped in 60 kg jute bags to a roaster or trader is not a retail SKU and does not carry a consumer label. A roasted or instant retail pack does. In that case the label must carry Arabic, either alone or alongside English with identical content, and must include product name, full ingredient list, net weight, production and expiry dates, storage conditions and country of origin. Stickers are permitted but must be applied before export rather than on arrival.
Do I need to register coffee with Dubai Municipality?
Food products sold in the UAE must be registered with the relevant municipal authority before reaching shelf, with the label, ingredient list, certificate of analysis, nutritional information and shelf life submitted per product. First time products can be selected for laboratory testing. Registration attaches to retail SKUs rather than to bulk green coffee moving to a roaster. Your UAE entity also needs a trade licence carrying a food import or food trading activity before it can access the import platforms at all.
Can I import green coffee into a Dubai free zone and re-export it?
Yes, and it is a common structure. Jebel Ali Free Zone hosts purpose built coffee infrastructure including temperature and humidity controlled green bean storage, cleaning, de-stoning, blending and re-bagging, contract roasting and packing, and SCA standard cupping facilities. A trader can land Indian green coffee, add value in Dubai and re-export across the Gulf, wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia without entering the UAE domestic market. The free zone and mainland routes carry different documentation, so decide which you are doing before booking.
Is Halal certification required for coffee in the UAE?
Plain green and roasted coffee is a single ingredient agricultural product, but Halal certification is frequently requested by UAE buyers and becomes materially more relevant for flavoured, blended or additive containing lines where every ingredient must be accounted for. Halal certification is held by the producing and processing facility within our supplier network rather than by Alstoe, and we supply the certificate with the shipment where your buyer or your registration requires it. Raise it at the inquiry stage so we match your requirement to a facility with the right scope.
Which Indian coffee grade suits a Gulf espresso programme?
Robusta Cherry AA is the usual starting point for the region, since sun drying with the fruit intact gives a full bodied, earthy cup with pronounced sweetness and strong crema that sits naturally in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean espresso traditions. Robusta Kaapi Royale, the washed Parchment A grade, is the alternative where a cleaner cup is wanted without losing body. Roasters wanting more sweetness often blend in Arabica Cherry AA. Ask for a sample set across all three and cup them against your current blend.
What is the minimum order quantity for green coffee?
Standard MOQ for green coffee is one 20 foot FCL container, approximately 18 to 20 MT loaded as around 300 jute bags of 60 kg each. Roasted coffee is 200 kg per roast profile and instant coffee is 500 kg per profile. LCL shipments can be discussed for trial orders and specialty single origin lots, and the short sea leg on this route makes small trial quantities far more practical than on long haul corridors.
Is moisture damage a risk on such a short voyage?
The sea leg is short enough to reduce the moisture pickup that troubles longer routes, but Gulf humidity at discharge and during onward storage is a real risk. Standard packing remains 60 kg jute bags with GrainPro hermetic inner liners, and every consignment includes an ochratoxin A test report from a NABL accredited lab. Temperature and humidity controlled warehousing is available in the Jebel Ali free zone for buyers holding stock.
What payment terms apply to UAE coffee orders?
Coffee contracts are on advance payment against proforma invoice. A 500 g sample is dispatched free within 48 hours and cup scores are locked in writing before the order is confirmed, so you approve the lot before any payment is discussed.
