Can you import coffee from India to South Korea?

Yes. Korea imports nearly all of its coffee, its cafe sector has expanded dramatically over the past two decades, and green coffee carries a low base tariff with preferential access available under free trade agreements. The product side is straightforward.

The compliance side is where Korean imports differ from most markets, in three specific ways that catch first time buyers. The supplying facility must be registered with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety before you can even file an import declaration. Korea applies a Positive List System for pesticide residues that defaults to a very low limit where no Korean limit exists. And your first shipment of a new product from a new facility is treated differently from every shipment after it. All three are set out below.

Alstoe India Exports supplies green, custom roasted and instant coffee from a strong network of verified suppliers across the Western Ghats belt in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. For the complete grade reference, cultivars and processing detail, see our complete Indian coffee portfolio.

Three things Korea does differently

1. The facility must be registered before you can declare the import. Under the Special Act on Imported Food Safety Management, foreign manufacturing plants and establishments supplying food to Korea must be registered with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Registration is completed on an MFDS platform available in English as well as Korean, there is no registration fee, and it must be in place before the import declaration is filed. Registration also carries an undertaking to accept on site inspection where MFDS requires it.

2. Korea's Positive List System sets a very low default residue limit. Since January 2019 Korea has applied a Positive List System to pesticide residues across all agricultural products. Where a Korean maximum residue limit or an import tolerance exists for a given pesticide and commodity combination, that limit applies. Where neither exists, a default tolerance of 0.01 mg per kg applies. The same standard applies to domestic and imported product alike. This is materially stricter than a market that simply defers to a Codex or exporting country limit, and it means a substance used lawfully at origin can still fail at the Korean border if no Korean limit has been set for it. Where no domestic limit exists, an import tolerance has to be applied for.

3. Your first shipment is inspected differently from your tenth. No product registration is required to import food into Korea, but a product new to the market is subject to laboratory testing by the relevant inspection agency. Once a lot has passed that testing, subsequent shipments of the same product generally clear on a lighter inspection track rather than repeating full laboratory testing. Plan the first consignment as a compliance event, not a commercial one. A smaller, well documented first lot from a single facility is the sensible way in.

We are not in a position to tell you what your inspection outcome will be, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is give you the residue testing, origin documentation and facility details you need before you commit, and tell you plainly if a facility is not in a position to supply Korea.

Origin Case

Why Korean roasters look at Indian coffee

Korea has one of the most developed cafe cultures in Asia, built over roughly two decades of rapid growth, and it imports effectively all of its coffee. The green bean shelf is dominated by Latin American and East African arabica. That is precisely where an Indian origin has something to offer, because it is not competing on the same ground.

Washed Robusta that behaves

Korean cafe programmes are milk heavy and espresso led. Robusta Kaapi Royale is wet processed rather than sun dried, which keeps the body and thick crema that a milk drink needs while removing the harshness that makes most commodity Robusta unusable in a specialty setting. It is a blend component, not a filler.

A single origin nobody else is pouring

Monsoon Malabar is produced nowhere else. Green beans are exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks, swelling to nearly twice their size and turning pale gold, giving a bold, earthy, very low acid cup. In a market where menu differentiation is intensely competitive, that is a story no other origin can tell.

Northeast Asian palate adjacency

Indian washed Arabica, particularly Plantation AA, already finds a home with specialty roasters and upper tier retail across Europe and Japan. Smooth body, mild acidity and a clean finish sit closer to Northeast Asian taste preferences than a bright, high acid washed African lot does.

A useful difference from the Gulf. Korean requirements allow the local language label to be applied by sticker or tag after arrival, provided it is not easily removed and does not cover the original label. That is the opposite of several Middle Eastern markets, where stickering must be completed before the goods leave origin. If you are running one supply chain across both regions, do not assume the same artwork process works for both. Confirm the current position with your own regulatory adviser before committing artwork.

Grade Selection

Matching Indian grades to Korean applications

Indian coffee is graded by species, processing method and screen size. The table maps the grades most relevant to Korean buyers against the application each one suits. Cup scores are typical SCA ranges, verified per lot before dispatch and recorded on the Quality Report, never quoted from a catalogue.

Monsoon Malabar AA

Natural Arabica exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks. The beans absorb humidity, swell to nearly twice their size and turn pale gold, giving a bold, earthy, very low acid cup with heavy body. For a Seoul roastery competing on menu distinctiveness, it is an origin story no competitor can replicate.

Korean Regulatory

What governs a coffee import into Korea

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety administers imported food safety, from foreign facility registration through import declaration to border inspection. This is the sequence a Korean importer works through.

  1. Confirm the supplying facility is registered with MFDS

Foreign manufacturing plants and establishments supplying food to Korea must be registered with MFDS under the Special Act on Imported Food Safety Management. Registration is free, completed on a platform available in English, and carries an undertaking to accept on site inspection where MFDS requires it. It has to be in place before an import declaration can be filed, so it belongs at the start of the process rather than alongside it.

  2. File the import declaration with MFDS

Every consignment of imported food is declared to MFDS, which determines the inspection type applied. No separate product registration is required, but the declaration is what triggers the inspection decision, and the inspection type depends on whether the product and facility combination is new to the market.

  3. Plan for laboratory testing on the first shipment

A product new to the Korean market is subject to laboratory testing by the relevant inspection agency. Once a lot has passed, subsequent shipments of the same product generally clear on a lighter inspection track. Treat the first consignment as a compliance milestone: keep it modest, source it from a single facility, and make sure the documentation is complete, because everything after it depends on that lot passing.

  4. Check residues against the Korean list, not the European one

Korea applies a Positive List System for pesticide residues across all agricultural products. Where a Korean maximum residue limit or an import tolerance exists, that applies. Where neither exists, a default tolerance of 0.01 mg per kg applies. A residue screen certified against European limits does not answer the Korean question, because European compliance and Korean compliance are different tests. Tell us which substances your buyer or your own laboratory screens for, and we will test against that list.

  5. Claim any preferential tariff with a Certificate of Origin

Korea applies a low base rate of duty on unroasted coffee, with preferential rates available to origins covered by a free trade agreement. India and Korea have a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in force. Preferential treatment is claimed at customs entry against a valid Certificate of Origin, and it is not automatic. Confirm the treatment of your specific tariff line with your Korean customs broker before the container sails, and ask us for the origin documentation with every shipment.

Quality Assurance

Where the Korean risk actually sits

On most routes the quality conversation is about cup score and moisture. On this one it is about residues, because the Positive List System converts an unlisted substance into a near zero tolerance. That is a testing and documentation problem more than a growing problem, and it is solvable if it is raised early.

Confirm on every contract

  • Residue screen scopeAgainst your Korean list
  • Moisture content10% to 12%
  • Screen uniformityMin 90% on stated screen
  • Defect countMax 5 per 300g, specialty
  • Foreign matterBelow 0.5%
  • Cup score, SCALocked in writing per lot
  • Ochratoxin ATested per consignment
  • Crop year and harvest dateStated on the lot card

How we protect the lot

  • Residue screening at a NABL accredited laboratory, scoped to the substance list you supply rather than to a generic European panel
  • Composite sampling from front, middle and back of the container, not from a single cleaned lot
  • Cup scores issued by SCA certified Q graders and locked in writing with the order confirmation
  • 60 kg jute bags with GrainPro hermetic liners, holding moisture stable across the voyage
  • Ochratoxin A test report with every consignment
  • Estate name, altitude, cultivar mix, processing method and harvest date on every lot card

Send us the list. A residue certificate is only as useful as the panel it was tested against. If your Korean adviser or your own laboratory works from a specific list of substances, send it at the enquiry stage and we will scope the pre shipment screen to it. Testing against the wrong panel is the most avoidable way to fail an inspection.

Review the full quality parameter set covering the physical, chemical and microbiological tests run on every shipment.

Logistics

Shipping to Busan and Incheon

Coffee from the Western Ghats loads at Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai. Busan is Korea's principal container gateway and handles the majority of import volume, with Incheon serving the capital region. Which you use is usually decided by where your warehouse and roastery sit rather than by the coffee.

Transit times are deliberately not published here. Services to Northeast Asia vary in routing and transhipment, and a figure printed on a supplier website would go stale faster than it would help. Ask your freight forwarder for a current transit and service string, and tell us what you are given so the lot can be packed for the actual voyage.

Packing for the voyage

How To Order

From first enquiry to vessel loading

Six steps for a Korean buyer, because the registration check comes before everything else. Standard turnaround from confirmed order to loading is 20 to 30 days for green beans, 25 to 35 days for roasted and 30 to 45 days for instant coffee.

  1. Raise Korea at the first message

Tell us the destination is Korea before anything else. We will give you the facility details you need to verify MFDS registration, and the residue panel we can test to, so you can check both before spending time on specification.

The case for a small first lot

Because a product new to the Korean market draws laboratory testing on its first shipment, and subsequent shipments of the same product from the same facility generally clear more lightly, the first consignment carries a different risk profile from every one after it.

LCL shipments can be discussed for specialty single origin lots and for first time buyers. On this route that is not a concession, it is the sensible sequence: clear a modest lot cleanly, then scale into container volumes with the inspection history already established.

Frequently Asked

Korean coffee import questions, answered

Does the supplying facility need to be registered with MFDS?

Yes. Ask your supplier for the facility details and verify the registration before you contract.

What is Korea's Positive List System and why does it matter for coffee?

Since January 2019 Korea has applied a Positive List System to pesticide residues across all agricultural products. Where a Korean maximum residue limit or an import tolerance exists for a pesticide and commodity combination, that limit applies. Where neither exists, a default tolerance of 0.01 mg per kg applies, and the same standard applies to domestic and imported product alike. This matters because a substance used lawfully at origin can still fail at the Korean border if no Korean limit has been set for it. A residue certificate issued against European limits does not answer the Korean question. Send the substance list your adviser works from and the pre shipment screen can be scoped to it.

Is my first shipment inspected differently?

Generally yes. No product registration is required to import food into Korea, but a product new to the market is subject to laboratory testing by the relevant inspection agency. Once a lot has passed that testing, subsequent shipments of the same product generally clear on a lighter inspection track rather than repeating full laboratory testing. The practical consequence is that the first consignment should be treated as a compliance milestone rather than a commercial one: keep it modest, source it from a single facility, and make sure the documentation is complete.

Does my label need to be in Korean, and when must it be applied?

Imported products sold at retail in Korea are required to carry a legible Korean language label. Korean requirements allow the label to be applied by sticker or tag after arrival, provided it is not easily removed and does not cover the original label. That differs from several Middle Eastern markets, where stickering must be completed before the goods leave origin. If you run one supply chain across both regions, do not assume the same artwork process serves both. Green coffee in jute bags moving to a roaster is not a retail product and does not carry a consumer label.

What duty applies to Indian green coffee entering Korea?

Korea applies a low base rate of duty on unroasted coffee, with preferential rates available to origins covered by a free trade agreement. India and Korea have a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in force. Preferential treatment is claimed at customs entry against a valid Certificate of Origin and is not automatic; without a valid certificate at clearance the base rate applies. Confirm the treatment of your specific tariff line with your Korean customs broker before the container sails.

Which Indian grade suits a Korean cafe espresso programme?

Robusta Kaapi Royale, the washed Parchment A grade, is the usual starting point, since wet processing delivers crema and body without the harshness of natural Robusta. That matters in a market where most espresso is served in milk. Roasters wanting more sweetness often blend in Arabica Cherry AA, and Monsoon Malabar AA adds low acid body plus a distinctive origin story. Ask for a sample set across all three and cup them against your current blend.

What is Monsoon Malabar and why would a Korean roaster list it?

Monsooning is a post harvest process unique to India, not a varietal. Natural Arabica beans are exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks, absorbing humidity, swelling to nearly twice their size and turning pale gold. The result is a bold, earthy, very low acid cup with heavy body. In a Korean market where menu differentiation is intensely competitive and the green shelf is dominated by Latin American and East African arabica, it offers something no other origin can replicate.

What is the minimum order quantity for green coffee?

Standard MOQ for green coffee is one 20 foot FCL container, approximately 18 to 20 MT loaded as around 300 jute bags of 60 kg each. Roasted coffee is 200 kg per roast profile and instant coffee is 500 kg per profile. LCL shipments can be discussed for specialty single origin lots and for first time buyers, which on the Korean route is often the sensible sequence given how first shipment inspection works.

How long does shipping take from India to Korea?

No transit figure is published here. Services from Indian ports to Northeast Asia vary in routing and transhipment, and a number printed on a supplier website would go stale faster than it would help. Ask your freight forwarder for a current transit and service string to Busan or Incheon, and tell us what you are given so the lot can be packed for the actual voyage rather than an assumed one.

Can you supply organic certified coffee for Korea?

Certified lots are available through our supplier network, primarily from estates in Araku Valley and selected Wayanad and Coorg estates, with 8 to 12 weeks lead time. Certification is held by the producing and processing facility rather than by Alstoe, and we supply the full certificate chain. Note that organic marketing claims in Korea are separately regulated and an overseas organic certification does not automatically transfer, so confirm the recognition position with your Korean regulatory adviser before making a claim on pack.

What payment terms apply to Korean coffee orders?

Payment terms are confirmed on the proforma invoice against your written specification. A 500 g sample is dispatched free within 48 hours and cup scores are locked in writing before the order is confirmed, so you approve the lot before any payment is discussed.
