Import Coffee from India to the USA

Export grade Indian Arabica, Robusta and specialty coffee for roasters, importers and distributors across the United States. Q graded, SCA cup scored, and shipped with the origin documentation your customs broker needs.

  • Green coffee beans
  • Custom roasted
  • Instant coffee

Can you import coffee from India to the USA?

Yes. Indian green coffee enters the United States under HTS subheading 0901.11.00 for unroasted, non decaffeinated coffee, and no import license specific to coffee is required.

What a US buyer does need is an FDA Prior Notice filed before the shipment arrives, a Foreign Supplier Verification Program naming the importer of record, and a customs entry filed through a licensed broker. Each of those is covered further down this page.

Alstoe India Exports supplies green, custom roasted and instant coffee to US buyers from a strong network of verified suppliers across the Western Ghats belt in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. For the complete grade reference, cultivars, processing methods and photographs of every bean, see our complete Indian coffee portfolio.

Why US roasters evaluate Indian coffee

India is not a volume substitute for Brazil or Vietnam and does not compete on being the cheapest Robusta on the water. What it offers a US buyer is a set of cup characteristics that are difficult to source elsewhere, plus an agroforestry story that holds up to retail scrutiny.

Shade grown by tradition

Indian coffee is grown under a silver oak shade canopy in polyculture systems, interplanted with pepper and cardamom. Shade cultivation is the default here rather than a certification add on, which gives US sourcing teams a straightforward biodiversity narrative for the pack.

Washed Robusta that earns its place

Robusta Kaapi Royale and the Parchment grades are wet processed, which strips the harshness of natural Robusta while keeping body and thick crema. For a cafe program where the shot has to survive twelve ounces of milk, this does work a soft Arabica cannot.

An uncrowded shelf position

The United States takes a small single digit share of India's coffee exports, well behind Italy and Germany, which together account for roughly a quarter. Indian origin is still an unusual single origin on a US menu board rather than a commodity every roaster already lists.

Monsoon Malabar AA

Natural Arabica exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks. The beans absorb humidity, swell to nearly double their size and turn pale gold, producing a bold, earthy, very low acid cup that no other origin replicates. US roasters use it as a low acid single origin and as a body builder in espresso.

Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold

The largest screen washed Arabica in the Indian crop at 19/64 inch and above. Bluish green, polished, smooth body with mild acidity and a clean finish carrying chocolate and citrus. The flagship Indian washed Arabica, and the natural choice for a retail bagged single origin.

Robusta Kaapi Royale

The Coffee Board trade name for washed Robusta Parchment A. Wet processing gives a clean cup that keeps Robusta's body and thick crema while removing the harshness of natural Robusta. The Robusta of choice for European espresso blenders and increasingly for US cafe programs.

US Regulatory

FDA and CBP requirements for importing coffee into the US

Green coffee is a food under US law, so it falls under the Food Safety Modernization Act. Most first time importers underestimate the Foreign Supplier Verification Program, which is where FDA attention actually lands. This is the sequence a US importer of record follows.

  1. Confirm the supplying facility is FDA registered

Any foreign facility that manufactures, processes, packs or holds food for US consumption must hold a current FDA food facility registration, renewed every two years, with a Unique Facility Identifier. FDA currently recognizes the DUNS number for this. Shipments from an unregistered facility can be detained or refused.

  2. Build your FSVP plan before the first shipment

FSVP sits with the US importer, not the exporter. It is a live program rather than a form: hazard analysis, supplier evaluation, verification activities and records. Green coffee benefits from being roasted before consumption, which lowers the hazard profile, but the plan must exist and be produced on request. FDA runs unannounced FSVP audits on green coffee importers.

  3. File Prior Notice before arrival

FDA must receive an electronic Prior Notice for every food entry before the goods reach the first US port, filed through the ABI of the Automated Commercial Environment or the FDA Prior Notice System Interface. The confirmation number links to the customs entry. Errors here are the most common cause of avoidable holds.

  4. Submit the Importer Security Filing for ocean freight

Vessel shipments require an ISF, commonly called 10 plus 2, filed with CBP in advance of loading at origin. We supply the origin side data your broker needs to file it on time.

  5. Identify the FSVP importer in ACE at entry

At entry your broker identifies the FSVP importer, usually the ultimate consignee, along with the FDA product code and accurate manufacturer information. Get this field right and most entries clear without examination.

Quality Assurance

What US buyers should confirm before contracting

The most common complaint about Indian coffee suppliers is that the pre shipment sample cups cleanly and the container arrives different. These are the parameters to lock in writing on your order confirmation, and how we handle each.

Confirm on every contract

  • Moisture content10% to 12%
  • Screen uniformityMin 90% on stated screen
  • Defect countMax 5 per 300g, specialty
  • Foreign matterBelow 0.5%
  • Cup score, SCALocked in writing per lot
  • Ochratoxin ATested per consignment
  • Crop year and harvest dateStated on the lot card

How we protect the lot

  • Composite sampling from front, middle and back of the container, not from a single cleaned lot
  • Cup scores issued by SCA certified Q graders, not self assessed
  • Cup score locked in writing with the order confirmation
  • 60 kg jute bags with GrainPro hermetic liners to hold moisture stable across a 25 to 32 day voyage
  • OTA test report from a NABL accredited lab with every consignment
  • Estate name, altitude, cultivar mix, processing method and harvest date on every lot card

Trial orders and first shipments

Standard green coffee MOQ is one 20 ft container. For a first time US buyer who wants to cup and roast at commercial scale before committing to a full container, LCL shipments can be discussed for specialty single origin lots. Tell us at the inquiry stage rather than after the quote, since it changes the routing and the freight structure.

We would rather ship you a small first lot that performs than a full container that does not.

Frequently Asked

US coffee import questions, answered

Do I need a license to import coffee into the United States?

No license or permit specific to coffee is required. You do need to meet FDA food import requirements: the supplying facility must hold a current FDA registration, an electronic Prior Notice must be filed before arrival, and you must maintain a Foreign Supplier Verification Program as the importer. The customs entry is filed through a licensed customs broker.

How is US duty on green coffee from India determined?

Green coffee is classified under HTS subheading 0901.11.00 for unroasted, non decaffeinated coffee. Duty treatment follows the classification applied at entry and the measures in force at that time, and it is settled at the moment of entry rather than at contract. Confirm the current position with your licensed customs broker before quoting a landed cost. We supply every commercial document needed to support the classification.

What is FSVP and who is responsible for it?

The Foreign Supplier Verification Program is a Food Safety Modernization Act requirement that sits with the US importer, not the foreign exporter. You must verify that your supplier produces food meeting US safety standards, through hazard analysis, supplier evaluation, verification activities and recordkeeping. FDA conducts unannounced FSVP audits on green coffee importers, so the plan needs to exist before your first container arrives.

What is the minimum order quantity for green coffee?

Standard MOQ for green coffee is one 20 foot FCL container, approximately 18 to 20 MT loaded as around 300 jute bags of 60 kg each. Roasted coffee is 200 kg per roast profile and instant coffee is 500 kg per profile. LCL shipments can be discussed for trial orders, specialty single origin lots and first time buyers building confidence.

How long does shipping take from India to the USA?

Indicative ocean transit is about 25 to 32 days to US East Coast ports and about 30 to 38 days to the West Coast via Suez, loading at Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai. Actual times vary with carrier, service string and routing via Suez or the Cape of Good Hope, so confirm the current schedule with your freight forwarder before planning around an arrival date.

Which Indian coffee grade suits a US espresso blend?

Robusta Kaapi Royale, the washed Parchment A grade, is the usual starting point, since wet processing delivers crema and body without the harshness of natural Robusta. Roasters wanting more sweetness often blend in Arabica Cherry AA or Monsoon Malabar AA for low acid body. Ask for a sample set across all three and cup them against your current blend.

What is Monsoon Malabar and why do US roasters buy it?

Monsooning is a post harvest process unique to India, not a varietal. Natural Arabica beans are exposed to monsoon winds on the Malabar coast for twelve to sixteen weeks, absorbing humidity, swelling to nearly double their size and turning pale gold. The result is a bold, earthy, very low acid cup with heavy body. US roasters use it as a low acid single origin for customers who find bright coffees harsh, and as a body builder in espresso blends.

How do you protect against moisture damage on a long US voyage?

Coffee absorbs ambient moisture during a 25 to 32 day sea voyage in a steel container at high humidity, which can spike moisture content and allow mould to develop. Standard packing is 60 kg jute bags with GrainPro hermetic inner liners that hold internal moisture stable throughout transit. Every consignment includes an Ochratoxin A test report from a NABL accredited lab, and desiccant packs plus humidity monitor data are available on request.

Can you supply certified organic coffee for the US market?

Certified lots are available through our supplier network, primarily from estates in Araku Valley and selected Wayanad and Coorg estates, with 8 to 12 weeks lead time. Certification is held by the producing and processing facility rather than by Alstoe, and we supply the full certificate chain including Scope and Transaction Certificates. To market coffee as organic in the United States you will need certification recognized under the USDA National Organic Program, so raise it at the inquiry stage and we will match you to a facility carrying the right scope.

What payment terms apply to US coffee orders?

Coffee contracts are on advance payment against proforma invoice. A 500 g sample is dispatched free within 48 hours and cup scores are locked in writing before the order is confirmed, so you approve the lot before any payment is discussed.
