In short: To import coffee from India to Belgium, a Belgian buyer needs an EORI number, food business registration with the FASFC, and an excise arrangement for coffee, then orders green Arabica or Robusta under HS 0901.11, which enters the EU duty free. Unlike Germany, Belgium levies national excise on coffee including unroasted beans, but it falls due only on release for consumption in Belgium, which is why so much coffee sits under suspension in Antwerp warehouses or moves on to other markets. Indian origin is EUDR low risk. Shipments load at Mangalore, Cochin or Chennai for Antwerp in about 22 to 28 days, on advance payment.

Market Overview

Why Belgian buyers source coffee from India

Belgium is not just a coffee market, it is the place Europe keeps its coffee. The Port of Antwerp holds more green coffee than anywhere else on earth, over 250,000 tonnes at any one time, spread across more than a million square metres of warehousing run by houses such as Molenbergnatie, Pacorini, Vollers, Katoen Natie and C. Steinweg. Those warehouses are accredited as certified delivery points for the exchange-traded coffee contracts, which is why the physical market gravitates there, and the Scheldt location gives direct barge, rail and road access to France, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland.

The trade numbers follow the warehouses. Belgium was Europe's fourth-largest green coffee importer in 2024 at roughly 282,000 tonnes, and Europe's largest re-exporter of green coffee, sending about 184,000 tonnes onward, roughly two-thirds of what it takes in, with France and Spain the biggest onward destinations. Two things matter to an origin supplier here. First, close to 88% of Belgium's green coffee arrives directly from producing countries rather than through other European traders, so Belgian buyers are used to contracting at origin. Second, Belgium leads Europe on certified coffee: it took in around 30,000 tonnes of organic green coffee in 2023, roughly 22% of all European organic green coffee imports and the highest organic share of any European market, while Rainforest Alliance is the label carried across the main supermarket chains.

India fits this market on three fronts. India is the world's seventh-largest coffee producer and a top-five producer of Robusta, which is over 70% of the crop, and Belgium is India's third-largest coffee destination after Italy and Germany, taking roughly 7.5% of Indian coffee export value. Belgium's mainstream and private label blends carry high Robusta proportions, which is exactly where natural Robusta Cherry sits, with its body, sweetness and thick crema. Washed Plantation Arabica from the Western Ghats gives blenders a low-acid base. And Belgium's pod, capsule and private label manufacturing is large, which lines up with India's value-added capacity, where instant and other processed coffee now makes up close to 38% of Indian coffee export value.

At Alstoe India Exports, we run the Belgium lane the way Antwerp audits it: grade and screen fixed to Coffee Board classification, cup scoring fixed in writing through SCA-certified Q-graders at a partner facility, GrainPro-lined packing with ochratoxin testing, and estate-level lot cards with GPS coordinates for traceable lots, with the complete Indian coffee range behind it, green, roasted and instant.

EUDR: India is a low-risk origin, and we supply the data

The EU Deforestation Regulation covers coffee placed on the EU market. Under the December 2025 revision, the main obligations apply from 30 December 2026 for medium and large operators and traders, and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, and in May 2026 the Commission confirmed there would be no further postponement. India is classified low risk under the EU country benchmarking, which puts your due diligence on the simplified track. For the lots we supply, we provide plot geolocation coordinates, harvest data and the supporting file for your due diligence statement, so you are ready before the date, not after it. Reviewed July 2026.

Grades and Formats

Indian coffee grades Belgian buyers ask for

Indian coffee is graded under the Coffee Board system by species, processing and screen size. For Belgium we supply washed Arabica Plantation from AA down to C (PL AA, PL A, PL B, PL PB, PL C) and natural Robusta Cherry from AA down to C (RC AA, RC A, RC AB, RC B, RC C, RC PB), with Robusta Cherry AA and AB the workhorses for blends, pods and instant, and Plantation A the washed Arabica base. The full grade-by-grade classification, cup profiles and specialties such as Monsoon Malabar and Kaapi Royale sit on our coffee page; this page stays focused on the Belgium lane. Beyond the stock range, Arabica Cherry, Robusta Parchment including Kaapi Royale and the monsooned specialties are sourced on request through the supplier network, subject to season. The current price list is shared on quote against your grade and quantity.

Duty and excise treatment is confirmed with your customs and excise agent at the current rates before pricing; the entries here describe the mechanism, not a rate. The Belgian excise rate differs by the form the coffee is presented in, unroasted, roasted, or as extracts and concentrates. Green beans are the bulk of this lane; roasted and instant ship under full private label and OEM options.

The Specifications That Matter

Three levers that set a coffee contract's value

Green coffee is priced on specifics, and disputes happen where specifics were left loose. These are the three levers we fix in writing before a container moves.

Grade
Coffee Board Code and Screen

Every lot carries its official grade code, screen size and defect tolerance, Plantation A means PL A at 17/64 inch, not "fine washed Arabica" in loose words. The grade on the invoice matches the grade in the bag.

Cup
Q-Graded, Score Locked

Cup scores are issued by SCA-certified Q-graders at a partner cupping facility from composite pre-shipment samples, and the score is fixed in writing with your order. If a destination sample falls materially below it, we agree a remedy, replacement or price adjustment.

Basis
Transparent Differential

Quotes hold for a defined window, and longer contracts can be structured on transparent differentials referenced to the London Robusta and New York Arabica terminals. No surprise invoices between confirmation and bill of lading.

Belgium Import Compliance

What Belgium requires, and who handles what

Coffee into Belgium is EU food import plus one Belgian particularity, the national excise on coffee, plus the EUDR layer. Here is the split between what you set up once as the importer, what happens per consignment, and what we handle from India.

Your side, set up once (Belgian importer)

  • Customs identityEORI number for EU customs
  • Food businessRegistration with the FASFC, the federal food chain safety agency
  • ExciseAn excise arrangement for coffee, and authorisation as an excise establishment if you hold or move it under suspension
  • EUDR roleOperator registration and due diligence statements in the EU system
  • ClearanceCustoms broker at Antwerp, plus a bonded warehouse keeper if you store before onward sale

Per consignment (shared)

  • TariffGreen coffee, HS 0901.11, enters the EU duty free; roasted and instant per the current tariff
  • ExciseDue on release for consumption in Belgium, suspended while the coffee stays under an authorised arrangement
  • EUDRDue diligence statement referencing our geolocation data, simplified track for low-risk India
  • Plant healthPhytosanitary certificate where plant-health rules require it
  • SafetyPesticide residues within EU limits, and ochratoxin A to your agreed specification, tested per lot
  • OriginICO Certificate of Origin with every shipment

Two details Belgian buyers appreciate having stated plainly. First, the excise: Belgium is one of a small group of EU countries that levies a national excise on coffee, and it is drawn wider than the German coffee tax. Under the Belgian law of 21 December 2009 on the excise regime for non-alcoholic beverages and coffee, coffee means unroasted coffee of CN code 0901, roasted coffee of CN code 0901, and extracts, essences and concentrates of coffee together with preparations based on them under CN code 2101. So green beans are inside the Belgian excise scope, where in Germany they sit outside the coffee tax. What softens that in practice is timing: the excise falls due on release for consumption in Belgium, so coffee held under an authorised suspension arrangement in an Antwerp bonded warehouse, or moved onward to another member state, is handled under that regime rather than taxed on arrival. Rates differ according to whether the coffee is presented unroasted, roasted, or as extracts and concentrates, so confirm the treatment for your flow with your excise agent before pricing. Second, EUDR timing: the main obligations apply from 30 December 2026 for medium and large operators and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, with no further postponement confirmed in May 2026, while the precise treatment of soluble and other derived coffee products is still being finalised through a draft delegated act on product scope. On contaminants, the EU statutory maximums for ochratoxin A are 3 micrograms per kilogram for roasted coffee and 5 micrograms per kilogram for soluble coffee; green beans carry no separate statutory limit, so any green-bean figure we work to is a buyer specification.

Where Coffee Imports Go Wrong

Six sourcing risks and how we remove them

The Problem

EUDR data gaps that block the market

From the 2026 deadline, coffee without plot-level geolocation and a valid due diligence statement cannot legally be placed on the EU market, and many origins still cannot produce the data.

How We Solve It

Low-risk origin, geolocation on the lots we ship

India is classified low risk under the EU benchmarking, so your due diligence runs on the simplified track, and the lots we supply ship with GPS plot coordinates, harvest data and the supporting file for your due diligence statement.

The Problem

Pre-shipment sample cups better than the container

The classic complaint against loose suppliers: the sample roast is clean, the bulk arrival shows higher defects and a different cup, and the buyer paid for a grade they did not receive.

How We Solve It

Composite sampling and a cup-score lock

Samples are drawn composite-style from across the container load, the Q-grader score is fixed in writing with the order, and a destination sample falling materially below it means we agree a remedy by replacement or price adjustment.

The Problem

Moisture and ochratoxin trouble in transit

Coffee absorbs moisture over a three-to-four-week voyage, and a moisture spike in standard jute means mould risk and ochratoxin A findings when the warehouse samples on intake at Antwerp.

How We Solve It

GrainPro liners and ochratoxin testing per lot

Standard packing is 60 kg jute with GrainPro hermetic liners holding moisture stable through transit, every consignment carries an ochratoxin A report from an accredited lab worked to a 5 ppb maximum on green beans, and desiccants with humidity monitoring are available for sensitive programmes.

The Problem

Certification and traceability claims with no chain behind them

Belgium runs the highest organic share in Europe and Rainforest Alliance sits across the main supermarket chains, so retail-facing programmes are audited on paper. Aggregated lots with no farm documentation cannot support a certified or single-origin claim.

How We Solve It

Estate lot cards and the full certificate chain

Traceable lots ship with a lot card naming the estate, GPS location, altitude, cultivar mix, processing method and harvest date. Where a programme calls for organic, Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade lots, these are sourced on request with the certificate chain intact and longer lead times stated up front.

The Problem

Cup score inflation that collapses at the cupping table

A supplier self-assesses a specialty score, the Belgian roaster cups it points lower, and the relationship ends on the first container.

How We Solve It

SCA Q-graders and independent verification

Scores come from SCA-certified Q-graders, not self-assessment, with joint video cuppings from a partner cupping facility in Karnataka or independent cupping through SGS, Bureau Veritas or your preferred lab arranged on request.

The Problem

Documents that stall clearance, excise and warehouse intake

Belgium adds an excise layer on top of customs, and a bonded warehouse will not take cargo in cleanly if the paperwork does not line up. A mismatch between bank documents, invoice, bill of lading and certificates means refusals, amendments and a container waiting at Antwerp on demurrage.

How We Solve It

One consistent set, released within 24 hours

Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, ICO origin, plant-health and, where applicable, fumigation certificates, the Quality Report and the EUDR data pack are prepared to match your bank documents word for word and shared within 24 hours of loading, so your broker and warehouse keeper have the file before the vessel berths.

Routes and Logistics

Indian coffee ports to Antwerp

Loading PortServesDischargeTypical Transit
New MangaloreKarnataka belts: Coorg, Chikmagalur; the main coffee gateway for EuropeAntwerp22 to 28 days
CochinKerala belts: Wayanad; monsooning warehouses on the Malabar coastAntwerp22 to 28 days
ChennaiTamil Nadu belts and consolidated lots from the eastAntwerp, Zeebrugge24 to 30 days

Shipments move FOB, CFR or CIF to your preference, with insurance certificates issued on CIF terms. Antwerp sits on the same North Europe rotation as Rotterdam and Hamburg, and Zeebrugge falls under the same Port of Antwerp-Bruges authority. From the quay, cargo moves into the bonded coffee warehouses for storage, sampling and rebagging, or straight to your roastery, with barge, rail and road links onward to France, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Documents are released early so clearance and warehouse intake are ready when the vessel berths. Harvest timing is worth planning around: the Arabica harvest runs November to February and Robusta January to March, so fresh-crop contracts are typically fixed November to March, while Monsoon Malabar finishes monsooning and comes to market from September.

Packaging and Private Label

Packing matched to your operation

60 kgJute bags with GrainPro hermetic liners, the green coffee standard
Big BagsSuper sacks for bulk container programmes
Valve BagsNitrogen-flushed retail packs for roasted, 200 g to 1 kg
Custom / OEMPrivate label artwork, bulk drums and sachets for instant

Materials and options: GrainPro-lined 60 kg jute is our green coffee standard for the Belgium lane because it holds moisture stable across the voyage, which is what the Antwerp warehouses sample against on intake, and the format the storage houses handle, stack and rebag every day. Roasted coffee ships nitrogen-flushed in one-way valve bags with private label artwork from 200 kg per profile; instant ships in food-grade drums, super sacks or retail formats. Marks and documentation for green coffee to Belgium are prepared in English, and consumer-facing labels are proofed in Dutch, French and English as your market requires before print.

Frequently Asked

Belgium coffee import questions, answered

Is Indian coffee EUDR compliant for the Belgian market?

India is classified a low-risk origin under the EU Deforestation Regulation's country benchmarking, which puts Belgian operators on the simplified due diligence track and lets micro and small primary operators file a one-time simplified declaration. Compliance still requires plot-level geolocation data and, for operators placing coffee on the market, a due diligence statement in the EU system. The main obligations apply from 30 December 2026 for medium and large operators and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, with no further postponement confirmed in May 2026. For the lots we supply, we provide GPS plot coordinates, harvest data and the supporting file for your statement.

Does Belgium charge excise duty on imported coffee?

Yes. Belgium is one of a small group of EU countries with a national excise on coffee, and its scope is wider than Germany's. Under the Belgian law of 21 December 2009 on the excise regime for non-alcoholic beverages and coffee, the definition covers unroasted coffee and roasted coffee of CN code 0901, plus extracts, essences and concentrates of coffee and preparations based on them under CN code 2101. So green beans are in scope in Belgium, where in Germany they are outside the coffee tax. The excise falls due on release for consumption in Belgium, so coffee held under an authorised suspension arrangement in a bonded Antwerp warehouse, or moved onward to another member state, is handled under that regime rather than taxed on arrival. Rates differ by the form the coffee is presented in, so confirm your treatment with your excise agent.

What duty applies on coffee imports into Belgium from India?

Green coffee under HS 0901.11 enters the European Union duty free. Roasted and instant coffee attract duty per the current EU tariff, confirmed with your customs broker before pricing. Import duty and the Belgian coffee excise are separate charges: duty is the EU customs layer at entry, while excise is a national charge that becomes due when the coffee is released for consumption in Belgium.

Which Indian coffee grades suit Belgian roasters and blenders best?

From our stock range, Robusta Cherry AA and AB carry the body, sweetness and crema that Belgian mainstream and private label blends are built on, with RC B and C serving industrial blends and instant manufacture. On the Arabica side, Plantation A is the washed blend foundation, Plantation AA and Peaberry serve specialty and single-origin programmes, and Plantation B and C cover commercial lines. Washed Robusta Parchment including Kaapi Royale and the monsooned Malabar specialties are arranged on request through the network.

Why does so much green coffee move through Antwerp?

Antwerp holds more green coffee than any other port in the world, over 250,000 tonnes at any one time across more than a million square metres of warehousing run by houses such as Molenbergnatie, Pacorini, Vollers, Katoen Natie and C. Steinweg. The warehouses are accredited as certified delivery points for exchange-traded coffee contracts, the climate suits long-term storage of green beans, and barge, rail and road links reach France, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland directly. That is why Belgium re-exported roughly 184,000 tonnes of green coffee in 2024, about two-thirds of what it imported.

How is quality verified before shipment?

Composite samples are drawn from across the container load, cupped by SCA-certified Q-graders, and the score is fixed in writing with your order confirmation. Moisture, screen uniformity, defect count, ochratoxin A and pesticide residues are tested at accredited labs and recorded on the Quality Report and Certificate of Analysis. Independent cupping or inspection through SGS or Bureau Veritas is arranged on request.

How do you protect coffee against ochratoxin A on the voyage to Belgium?

Ochratoxin risk comes from moisture movement during the three-to-four-week transit, and Antwerp warehouses sample on intake. Our standard packing is 60 kg jute with GrainPro hermetic liners that hold internal moisture stable, and every consignment carries an ochratoxin A report from an accredited lab, worked to a 5 ppb maximum on green beans as our standard. The EU statutory maximums apply to roasted (3 micrograms per kilogram) and soluble (5 micrograms per kilogram) coffee; green beans have no separate statutory limit, so this figure is a buyer specification. Desiccant packs with humidity monitoring are available for sensitive programmes.

What is the minimum order quantity?

For green beans, one 20 ft FCL of approximately 18 to 20 tonnes, loaded as 60 kg GrainPro-lined jute bags. Roasted coffee runs from 200 kg per roast profile and instant from 500 kg per profile, both with full private label and OEM options. Trial and LCL structures can be discussed for first orders.

How long does shipping take from India to Belgium?

Typically 22 to 28 days from New Mangalore or Cochin to Antwerp, and 24 to 30 days from Chennai, depending on routing. Antwerp sits on the same North Europe rotation as Rotterdam and Hamburg. Documents are released within 24 hours of loading so clearance and warehouse intake are ready when the vessel berths.

Can organic or certified sustainable Indian coffee be supplied for Belgium?

Yes, and Belgium is the right market to ask: it took in around 30,000 tonnes of organic green coffee in 2023, roughly 22% of all European organic green coffee imports and the highest organic share of any European market, while Rainforest Alliance runs across the main supermarket chains. EU Organic certified lots can be sourced on request, primarily from Araku Valley and select Wayanad and Coorg estates with the full certificate chain, on longer lead times. Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certified lots can be arranged for retail-facing programmes, and the lots we supply ship with estate-level traceability and EUDR geolocation data where available.
