Why importers source
red chilli from India

India is the world's largest producer and exporter of red chilli, supplying over 36% of global chilli trade. From the heat of Teja to the colour of Byadgi, India offers a variety profile no other origin can match.

India produces 1.7+ million metric tonnes of red chilli annually, with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh accounting for over 70% of the output. The country exports red chilli to more than 100 destinations including the United States, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

What makes Indian red chilli unique is the genetic diversity across varieties. Teja delivers extreme pungency for hot sauce manufacturers. Byadgi gives deep colour for oleoresin extraction and paprika replacement. Kashmiri offers mild heat with vibrant colour for premium culinary brands. This range lets importers source exactly the heat, colour and use profile their market needs from a single origin.

At Alstoe India Exports, we supply nine commercial red chilli varieties sourced directly from Guntur, Khammam, Warangal, Haveri and other producing belts. Available whole (with or without stem), powdered, in flakes, or crushed, with full export documentation, Spices Board compliance and destination-market label support.

Red chilli import
questions, answered

The questions importers, food processors and retail buyers ask most often before placing the first red chilli order from India. For anything not covered, get in touch and we will respond within 24 hours.

Which Indian red chilli variety has the highest pungency?
Teja (also known as S17) is India's hottest commercial red chilli variety, with Scoville Heat Units typically ranging from 75,000 to 100,000+. It is preferred by hot sauce manufacturers, instant noodle brands and importers in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Middle East where extreme heat is the primary requirement.
Which variety has the highest colour value?
Byadgi red chilli from Karnataka has the highest ASTA colour value among Indian varieties, typically 130 to 180+. It has low pungency (8,000 to 15,000 SHU) but exceptional deep red colour, making it the preferred choice for oleoresin extraction, paprika replacement, premium masala blends and natural food colouring applications.
What is the difference between Kashmiri and Byadgi chilli?
Both are low-pungency, high-colour varieties but with different profiles. Kashmiri has SHU around 1,000 to 2,000 with vibrant bright red colour, smoother skin and is used in premium culinary applications. Byadgi has slightly higher SHU (8,000 to 15,000) with deeper, darker red colour, wrinkled skin and is favoured for industrial oleoresin extraction and colour blends. Kashmiri is generally pricier; Byadgi has the higher ASTA value.
What is the typical MOQ for red chilli export from India?
Our standard minimum order quantity is one 20-foot FCL container, approximately 12 to 18 MT of red chilli depending on packaging. We can discuss LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments for trial orders, sample volumes and selected destinations. Large volume buyers can place 40-foot FCL or multi-container orders.
What are the EU and US MRL compliance levels for Indian red chilli?
Our red chilli is tested against EU MRL (Maximum Residue Levels) for pesticides as per EU Regulation 396/2005 and against US FDA requirements. Aflatoxin total below 10 ppb, aflatoxin B1 below 5 ppb. Salmonella absent in 25g. Pre-shipment third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek can be arranged for sensitive markets at buyer cost.
What is the harvest season for Indian red chilli?
India has two harvest seasons. The kharif (main) harvest runs December to April with peak supply in February and March; this is when most export contracts are negotiated. A secondary summer crop is harvested May to August in some regions. Red chilli is available year-round through cold storage and warehousing but prices fluctuate with seasonal supply.
Can you supply red chilli powder to my specific ASTA and SHU specification?
Yes. We can blend or source red chilli powder to your exact ASTA colour value and SHU pungency specification. Tell us your target ASTA (e.g., 100 ASTA), SHU (e.g., 40,000 SHU), mesh size (e.g., 60 mesh) and any additional parameters. We will recommend the variety blend that meets your spec and lock pricing accordingly.
Do you provide stem-on or stemless red chilli?
Both. We supply whole red chilli with stem (typical for retail and Asian markets) or stemless (preferred for food processing and powder production). Stemless adds a small premium per kg due to additional processing. Specify your preference at the quote stage.
What packaging options are available for red chilli export?
Bulk: 25 kg PP woven bags with liner, 50 kg jute bags (food-grade), PP laminated bags with moisture barrier, cardboard cartons for powder and flakes. Retail: 50g, 100g, 200g, 250g, 500g, 1 kg stand-up pouches, vacuum-sealed or resealable. Private label with your artwork, bilingual labels (Arabic, English, French) and destination-market label compliance available across all formats.
From which Indian ports do you ship red chilli?
Our standard export ports are JNPT (Nhava Sheva, Mumbai) for the Middle East and Europe, Mundra (Gujarat) for Europe and Africa, Chennai for Southeast Asia, and Tuticorin for South India destinations. Port selection depends on supplier location and destination. Typical transit times: UAE 5 to 8 days, Saudi Arabia 7 to 10 days, UK 22 to 28 days, USA 28 to 35 days.
Can you arrange private label red chilli for retail brands?
Yes. Full private label service including buyer's brand artwork, custom pouch shapes and sizes, bilingual labelling for destination compliance, barcode and batch coding. Suitable for retail chains, ethnic grocery brands, supermarket private labels and ingredient brands. Setup typically requires minimum 5 to 10 MT per SKU depending on packaging.
What payment terms do you accept for red chilli orders?
We accept Letter of Credit (LC at sight, irrevocable), Telegraphic Transfer with 30% advance and 70% against shipping documents, Cash Against Documents (CAD) for established buyers and Documents Against Acceptance (DA) for select credit-evaluated buyers. Settlement in USD (default), EUR or AED.
