Why importers source
turmeric from India

India produces nearly 75% of the world's turmeric and is the largest exporter, supplier and consumer of the spice. From standard 3% curcumin commercial varieties to the world's highest curcumin variety Lakadong (up to 12%), India offers a depth of choice no other origin can match.

India produces approximately 1.1 million metric tonnes of turmeric annually, with Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya and Odisha together accounting for over 80% of national output. India exports turmeric to more than 100 countries including the United States, the UAE, the United Kingdom, Iran, Bangladesh, Morocco, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Indian turmeric is uniquely suited to the global market because of its variety diversity and curcumin range. Salem and Alleppey Finger varieties offer 4 to 6.5% curcumin for premium retail and food processing buyers. Lakadong from Meghalaya, with curcumin levels of 7 to 12%, is the global benchmark for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical extraction. Commercial varieties like Erode, Nizamabad and Madras deliver consistent 2.5 to 4% curcumin for bulk powder and masala blends at competitive prices.

At Alstoe India Exports, we supply eleven turmeric varieties sourced directly from the producing belts of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Meghalaya and Kerala. Available as whole fingers (polished or unpolished), bulbs, powder in multiple mesh sizes, sliced or as oleoresin extract, with complete documentation, HPLC curcumin testing, heavy metal and Sudan dye verification per consignment.

Turmeric import
questions, answered

The questions importers, nutraceutical brands and food buyers ask most often before placing the first turmeric order from India. For anything not covered, get in touch and we will respond within 24 hours.

Which Indian turmeric variety has the highest curcumin content?
Lakadong turmeric from the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya has the highest naturally occurring curcumin content in the world, typically 7% to 12% as measured by HPLC. It is GI (Geographical Indication) tagged and supplied in limited volumes at a premium price point. For high-curcumin demand at more accessible pricing, Alleppey Finger (4 to 6.5%) and Waigaon (6.5 to 8%) are also strong choices.
How do you test and verify curcumin content?
Curcumin is tested by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) at NABL-accredited laboratories. Every consignment is tested before dispatch, and the actual lab-measured curcumin value is recorded on the Certificate of Analysis (COA) accompanying the shipment. We never quote curcumin values without HPLC backup. For sensitive markets, we can also arrange third-party HPLC verification by SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek at buyer cost.
Is your turmeric tested for lead and heavy metals?
Yes. Lead testing is mandatory on every turmeric consignment we dispatch. We test against the stricter of the two main regulatory standards: US FDA limit of 2.5 ppm lead in spices and EU Regulation 2023/915. Heavy metal screening also covers arsenic, cadmium and mercury. The lead test report is part of the COA package supplied with every shipment.
How do you ensure your turmeric is free from Sudan dyes?
Sudan I, II, III and IV dye testing is mandatory before dispatch. Sudan dye contamination has been a documented problem with some Indian turmeric in the past, and EU rejections rose sharply in the early 2020s. We screen for Sudan dyes at NABL labs on every lot, and the absence of Sudan dyes is certified in writing on the COA. We do not source from any supplier who cannot pass Sudan dye testing.
Can you supply organic certified turmeric?
Yes. We can supply USDA Organic and EU Organic certified turmeric, primarily from the Waigaon (Maharashtra) belt which has a strong organic farming tradition. Organic shipments require a longer lead time (typically 8 to 12 weeks) and are priced at a premium over conventional. We provide full certificate chain from farm to dispatch, including Scope Certificate and Transaction Certificate from the recognised certifying body.
What is the difference between finger and bulb turmeric?
Finger turmeric is the primary, elongated rhizome (the main "finger"), considered premium grade with higher curcumin content and a more attractive appearance. Bulb turmeric is the round, parent rhizome, generally lower in curcumin and priced more economically. Most premium retail and oleoresin buyers specify "finger only" shipments. Bulbs are typically used for grinding into powder, cosmetic applications and ethnic markets where price is the primary driver.
What is the difference between polished and unpolished turmeric?
Polished turmeric has the rough outer skin removed through rotary polishing or sandblasting, leaving a smooth, bright orange-yellow surface. It is the standard for retail and export. Unpolished turmeric retains the natural outer skin, has a duller appearance but is preferred by some Ayurvedic and traditional medicine buyers who want minimal processing. Polishing does not affect curcumin content. Polished costs slightly more due to the additional processing step.
What is the typical MOQ for turmeric export from India?
Our standard minimum order quantity is one 20-foot FCL container, approximately 18 to 22 MT of whole turmeric depending on packaging, or 12 to 15 MT for powder. We can discuss LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments for trial orders, sample volumes and high-value specialty varieties like Lakadong or organic certified turmeric. Large volume buyers can place 40-foot FCL or multi-container orders.
What is the harvest season for Indian turmeric?
India's main turmeric harvest is January to April, with peak supply between February and March. A smaller secondary harvest from some regions runs July to September. Lakadong turmeric has a specific harvest window of December to February. Most export contracts are negotiated during the main harvest window when fresh stock with highest curcumin is available. Turmeric stores well for 8 to 12 months in proper conditions, so year-round supply is maintained through warehouse stock.
Can you supply turmeric powder to a specific mesh size?
Yes. Standard mesh sizes are 40, 60, 80 and 100 mesh; finer mesh (200+ for pharmaceutical applications) is available on request. Specify your target mesh, target curcumin percentage and any colour value requirement at the quote stage. We can also blend powder from multiple varieties to hit a specific curcumin and colour target if a single variety does not match your spec.
Do you supply curcumin extract or oleoresin?
Yes. We supply curcumin extracts standardised typically to 95% curcuminoids (HPLC) for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical buyers, and turmeric oleoresin (curcumin 25 to 40%) for food colour and flavour applications. Extract pricing depends on curcumin standardisation, current Lakadong/Alleppey raw material prices and quantity. Sample availability and full specification sheets provided on request.
From which Indian ports do you ship turmeric?
Our standard export ports are JNPT (Nhava Sheva, Mumbai) for the Middle East, Europe and Americas, Mundra (Gujarat) for Europe and Africa, Chennai for Southeast Asia and Japan, and Cochin (Kerala) for Alleppey Finger and Lakadong specialty shipments. Port selection depends on supplier location and destination. Typical transit times: UAE 5 to 8 days, USA East Coast 22 to 28 days, UK 22 to 28 days, Japan 18 to 25 days.
Can you handle private label turmeric for retail brands?
Yes. Full private label service including buyer's brand artwork, custom pouch shapes and sizes, bilingual labelling for destination compliance, nutritional facts panels, barcode and batch coding. Suitable for retail chains, ethnic grocery brands, supplement companies, supermarket private labels and direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands. Setup typically requires minimum 5 to 10 MT per SKU depending on packaging format.
What payment terms do you accept for turmeric orders?
We accept Letter of Credit (LC at sight, irrevocable), Telegraphic Transfer with 30% advance and 70% against shipping documents, Cash Against Documents (CAD) for established buyers and Documents Against Acceptance (DA) for select credit-evaluated buyers. Settlement in USD (default), EUR or AED. For first orders we typically require LC or TT advance against pro-forma invoice.
